THE EXPANDED NOTION OF PUBLIC ART

The Internet, newspapers, TV and the streets mark an expanded territory
for public art. In response to this a ray of new expressions and media
are deployed by artists. What problems and possibilities emerge from this
in relation to the audience, artistic production and negotiations of
space?

ARTISTIC STRATEGIES BEYOND THE WALLS

Why public space? What does contemporary art have to offer an involuntary
audience beyond the walls of museums and art institutions? How does
working in public spaces influence art practice and strategies of today?
Can artistic strategies be used as a tool for realizing innovative
thinking and changes? Is a different form of sociality emerging?

CREATING DEBATE AND REACTION

Contemporary art interferes with the public debate using strategies such
as interventions and activism, by addressing indirect or direct political
issues, or simply by creating images or counter images that reflect
contemporary culture. Reactions and debate evolving around public art
projects become both extensions and continuations of the work in a direct
exchange of emotions, values and beliefs. How do artists engage in this
interaction and extension? Can debate orientated art create a more
complex reflection in public spaces and
debates?
