  The renowned Courtauld Institute in London is exhibiting the works of
Mas
len & Mehra in a group exhibition "Culture Bound" from the 20 Jan 2006
unti
l 2007. The East Wing Collection VII presents works of artists who have
exp
lored our perceptions of cultural boundaries, who have looked at the
system
s that form and affect us. "Culture Bound" questions the role of
perception
, realisation and categorisation in the formation of cultural identity.

The
 Berlin Gallery Caprice Horn will be presenting their latest works from

eb until the 5 May 2006.

  The works of Maslen & Mehra juxtapose images of moving people in busy
met
ropolitan streets with vast spaces and landscapes. "The contrast of
these
e
nlivened and emphasised landscapes with the silhouettes of the figural
scul
ptures shows an awareness of a disconnection to nature, that occurs in
busy
 urban cities." Closer scrutiny reveals the gestures of the urban
inhabitan
ts: Someone is seen talking on his mobile phone, another moves with his
hea
vy backpack of the globetrotter through the metropolitan jungle, he too
a
p
roduct clearly more of an urban than a rural environment. The
compositions 
contribute to the debate "whether people are a part or apart from
nature"
(
Maslen & Mehra, 2005).

  Maslen & Mehra photograph anonymous people in the busy urban settings.
Th
ese images are then used to fabricate sculptures which are then
projected
i
nto rural or remote landscapes. The total image is then re-photographed
res
ulting in the ultimate work. The finished image is then set up in full
scal
e brightly lit light boxes or as C-Prints. The light boxes are objects
of
f
ascination in themselves being disused advertising displays from the
London
 Tube. The circle is complete.
