steirischer herbst 2012 begins tomorrow with “Truth is concrete”, the  
170-hour Marathon Camp on artistic strategies in politics. During this  
marathon camp in the first week of the festival, more than 200  
artists, activists and theorists will be performing, debating, playing  
or lecturing round the clock in more than 150 events.

In order to keep you up to date in view of this tightly packed and  
diverse programme, over the next eight days we will be informing you  
about the programme for the following day in a daily newsletter.

The Camp itself is open to everyone round the clock, day and night,  
with free admission. Everyone is invited to drop by: for a lecture,  
for an hour or so, perhaps another hour, for a discussion, a  
performance, a concert, a film – the doors are always open, as long as  
there is room.

Truth is concrete on Friday 21/09

“Truth is concrete” kicks off with “Some kind of beginning” at 2 pm: a  
game byTim Etchells / Forced Entertainment, hosted by the performer  
Jerry Killick, that invites everyone to take a stand.

In his lecture “Are you talking to me?” at 3 pm, Gregory Sholette  
outlines an international cultural history of activism and committed  
art of the past decades. Followed by a two-hour block on art, activism  
and politics in Graz / Austria: in “Austrian politics – a crash course  
for foreigners”, Herwig G. Höller presents a selection of his  
collection of caustic videos on local politics, while Leo Kühbergerand  
Michael Zinganel trace cultures of resistance and the rise of the  
artistic avant-garde in the Styrian capital in “Graz in times of  
revolution” and “The province and the avantgarde” respectively.

Following an open-air concert by Graz big band Masala Brass at 6 pm  
and a performance by the Greek artist collective Kavecs at 7 pm, from  
8 till 10 pm there will be two high-profile lectures by the former  
mayor of Bogotá, Antanas Mockus, and Srda Popovic, the founder of  
CANVAS, the Centre for Applied Nonviolent Action and Strategies in  
Belgrade.

Antanas Mockus, who succeeded in reforming the million-strong capital  
Bogotá with unconventional strategies – for example mimes policing  
traffic – will be talking about his strategies and accomplishments. In  
his lecture “Laughtivism”, Srda Popovic will discuss the use of humour  
in social movements and nonviolent actions.

Starting at 10 pm is a series of twenty-minute tactic talks: short,  
very specific introductions to artistic and activist strategies that  
will take place throughout the marathon. Arash T. and Arman T. Riahi,  
for instance, will be presenting their project Everyday Rebellion,  
Róza El-Hassan, a visual artist of Hungarian and Syrian descent, will  
do a portrait on Hungarian-Israeli activist Toma Sik, French activists  
Jeudi Noir will explain their spontaneous squats in Paris, and Don  
Karl aka Stone will be talking about the Arab graffiti scene in times  
of revolution.

Performers Davis Freeman and Jerry Killick want to extract seven  
promises from their guests at midnight, with some dodgy methods – free  
vodka shots to help make the world a better place.

Lexxus Légal, “Worthy son of Africa”, a censored pioneer of African  
hip hop in his home country, takes to the stage for the first time in  
Austria at 1 am. The American music ethnologist Brian Shimkovitz  
presents “Awesome Tapes from Africa” after the concert.

To conclude the night or start off the day, depending on which way you  
look at it, at 5 am Graz-based Theater im Bahnhof invites you to  
morning breakfast meets and walks around the city, with different  
guests every day during the Camp week. The first excursion is to  
Stadtpark for a collective bout of early morning polit sports with  
choreographer Marta Navaridas (The Loose Collective) in preparation  
for the election.
