CITIES Foundation Newsletter – May 2018
April was an eventful month for CITIES, WASTED and FOODLOGICA. It was filled with community workshops, research, meetings, brainstorming sessions with the municipality, some more research, the day to day running of the business and expansion of the FOODLOGICA team, a few laughs and then a little bit more research. All of this work has been focused towards implementing bulky waste as part of the WASTED system, while also improving the existing system. We have designed new bags which look as good as they are to use. Last but by no means least, we will be hosting a party to celebrate the repair, reuse and recycle of bulky waste on the 26th of May at Pakmarkt. We are really excited about the party and hope to see you there. Stay tuned to our website and social media pages for more information on key events and news throughout the month.
We are excited to present our new bulky waste poster. A lot of research has gone into creating a poster that provides all the information needed to deal with second hand goods and bulky waste in Amsterdam Noord. The poster utilizes a short and easy to understand format. We are very happy with the final product and pleased to present it to you here. WASTED has been preparing for our expansion to bulky waste. We have undertaken a variety of research to understand bulky waste in Amsterdam Noord. We started with a preliminary session with the municipality of Amsterdam in February. This was followed up by workshops with the WASTED partners, such as ‘De Locatie’ and coordinators from the waste point and waste collections for Amsterdam Noord. Finally, we sent surveys out to WASTED members and held a residents workshop in order to understand community perspectives and experiences with bulky waste in the Noord. These processes are representative of ‘co-creation with the community’, a fundamental principle of WASTED. For a full report on the bulky waste research we conducted click here.
Improving the quality of user experience is an important part of growing and maintaining the WASTED community and participants. WASTED held a participant journey workshop, which was attended by 28 WASTED members. We also received written feedback from over 300 WASTED members who couldn’t attend the event but wanted to contribute. We took this as an affirmation of the positive relationship we have built with the Noord community. The workshop and feedback proved highly valuable in identifying the strong and weak points in user experience with the WASTED system. Next month we will be hosting our #LongLiveBulkyWaste or #LANGLEVEGROFVUIL party, where we will launch our bulky waste program. The event will be held on the 26th of May at the Pekmarkt. The theme is ‘give Bulky Waste a second life’. We encourage the Amsterdam Noord community to bring their unwanted goods to exchange. Remember, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure! There will be fun workshops such as a ‘pimp my waste’ workshop and a repair cafe helping people to breath new life into their electronics.
On the 17th of April, Francesca the founder of CITIES Foundation gave a presentation on WASTED to the European Environmental Funders Group. The event was hosted by the Adessium Foundation and the European Climate Foundation in Amsterdam. We are very pleased to have participated in this event connecting sustainability innovators like ourselves with funders.

On the 29th of April, WASTED hosted a Plastic Archeology Crash Course for a group of design students from Shanghai visiting the Netherlands to get in touch with circular initiatives". The workshop was a creative and educational workshop aiming to breath new life into waste plastic. In the Plastic Archeology Crash Course participants were able to explore and distinguish different types of plastic. They engaged in a separation learning experience. Sietse our Community Manager will be representing WASTED at a ‘Citizens engagement in shaping green cities’ event as part of European Green Week. Sietse will be one of six speakers at the event taking place on the 22nd of May in Bruxelles. This is a great opportunity to share our system with other sustainability leaders in europe and also hear about what other innovators are doing.
