La recherche de l’étrangeté caractérise l’art de Barbara Breitenfellner. En
utilisant des films super-8 d’amateurs, en dédoublant l’espace avec un
simple miroir ou en installant des dispositifs de caméra-surveillance, elle
provoque le trouble chez les visiteurs. Même s’il n’y a rien de choquant
dans les objets utilisés, provenant des marchés aux puces de Berlin, des
poubelles de l’école de cinéma de Babelsberg ou des archives filmiques du
Goethe Institut de Lille. C’est leur association, conçue par l’artiste, qui
produit une atmosphère inquiétante. Pour son ¦uvre intitulée Film
(non-réalisé) elle agence dans une serre des plantes carnivores, bandes
magnétiques, films 16mm et du matériel de montage cinématographique. Cette
exposition, comme la plupart de ses ¦uvres, trouve son fondement dans le
journal quotidien où elle recense ses rêves. « Ils sont étranges, laids et
contradictoires dans leur style comme dans leur contenu. En utilisant ce
matériau dans ma production artistique, je m’intéresse à ses qualités
spontanées et sa nature tyrannique » dit-elle. Un travail que
certains qualifieraient de surréaliste, là où il faut plutôt regarder le
quotidien de Jonas Mekas ou les ambiances de Mike Nelson.
Un multiple accompagne l’installation principale. Des boîtes d’entomologie,
faites
sur-mesure, dans lesquelles Barbara Breitenfellner agence des pages de son
journal avec des objets, des facsimilés et des originaux de photographies.
Ces quasi-vitrines sont une véritable mémoire du projet artistique, une
archive et une source. Le multiple doit être vu en relation avec la première
pièce de l’exposition, la serre, car leur fabrication l’accompagne, dans le
temps comme dans la pratique.
L’artiste allemande Barbara Breitenfellner, née en Autriche en 1969,
présente pour la première fois une installation d’importance en France.
Après des études de Lettres et d’Arts à l’Université de Mayence et un MFA à
l’École des Beaux-Arts de Glasgow, elle participe à des résidences
d’artistes et expositions (Danemark, États-Unis, Écosse) pour, début 2002,
se fixer à Berlin.
L’exposition Film (non-réalisé) sera présentée en automne à Berlin.
Elle reçoit le soutien de l’Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen
(Stuttgart-Berlin), du Goethe Institut de Lille
et l’aide de Juliana (Danemark).

Whatever medium she uses, the work of Barbara Breitenfellner is
characterized by disturbance and strangeness. Using found super-8 film
material, doubling spaces with simple mirror surfaces or working with
projections from live-surveillance cameras, she tries to trouble the
beholder. For the most part, the material itself has nothing provocative -
it comes from fleamarkets of Berlin, the film school in Babelsberg or the
film archives of the Goethe Institut in Lille. It is the way of assembling
it which produces a disquieting atmosphere. For her work, entitled Film
(non-réalisé), she arranges carnivorous plants, magnetic tapes, 16mm films
and cine-film editing equipment in a greenhouse. This exhibition, like a
large part of her work, derives from the daily journal where she notes her
dreams. “They are strange, ugly and contradictory in content and style. In
using them as a material for my artistic production, I am interested in
both, their spontanous qualities and their tyrranic nature”, she says. A
work that might easily be related to surrealism for some people, but it is
probably better to consider the everyday of Jonas Mekas or the atmospheres
of Mike Nelson.
A multiple accompanies the installation. Made-to-measure entomology boxes in
which Barbara Breitenfellner arranges pages of her diary with objects,
facsimiles and original photographies. Those near vitrines are a memory of
the artistic project, its archive and its source. The multiple should be
seen in relation to the main piece, the greenhouse. Both were developed at
the same time and from similar materials.
With Film (non-réalisé), the German artist Barbara Breitenfellner, born in
Austria in 1969, presents a major installation in France for the first time.
After a BA in literature and fine arts from the University of Mainz and an
MFA from the Glasgow School of Art, she takes part in residencies and
exhibitions (Denmark, USA, Scotland) and settles in early 2002 in Berlin.
The exhibition Film (non-réalisé), which will also be shown in Berlin this
autumn,
received support from the Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen
(Stuttgart-Berlin), the Goethe Institut Lille
and from Juliana (Denmark).
