<nettime> Dance and Video Review. Jonas Mekas, Virginie Marchand and Kazuo Ohno |
Dear list, My latest paper on Kazuo Ohno and Jonas Mekas has been published. Vol. 9 No. 2 (2023): Here Be Dragons. East Asian Film and Religion Dance and Video Review. Jonas Mekas, Virginie Marchand and Kazuo Ohno Abstract Marchand is an up-and-coming poet and filmmaker who is a grandchild from the perspective of Kazuo Ohno and Mekas. Her characteristic is to draw, in a very personal way, the layers of the human spirit in different part of the world. Marchand's work use a language with no rules, she is not a follower of other art people or history. She had screened some of her movies at the Anthology Film Archives and in few art galleries, and she shows extracts of them through Instagram and Youtube. This review is about a film in which she dances with the legendary Kazuo Ohno (1906-2010); it was shot by Jonas Mekas and edited by Marchand. The result is a deeply rooted spiritual experience, caught in moving images and reflecting a religious experience. https://www.jrfm.eu/index.php/ojs_jrfm/article/view/357 <https://www.jrfm.eu/index.php/ojs_jrfm/article/view/357?fbclid=IwAR1CVtH4H8svyK3vENqIOu1p5GWNu98yNeVq5yoxHY_xlGyAD67f21D6-PM> I am an editor of this issue: Volume 9, No. 2 Here Be Dragons. East Asian Film and Religion Published November 15, 2023 Edited by: Christian Wessely, Franz Winter, and Yukihiko Yoshida https://www.jrfm.eu/index.php/ojs_jrfm/issue/view/18 <https://www.jrfm.eu/index.php/ojs_jrfm/issue/view/18?fbclid=IwAR3aW6jFFH33DKeWkKijmeHwlK1Zi1Lm4ed1oWs8JLTrI_NND2sHRulHgM8> Issue description Media industry is a vibrant element of East Asian popular culture that has become increasingly important on a global level in the last decades. Japanese, and recently South Korean and Chinese films or TV series have a growing and worldwide audience not least because of easier access through streaming services. The many film productions provide a multifaceted arena of highly diverse content that spans nearly all aspects of the cultural developments in the countries. Religion has always played a major role in these contexts in various ways and in accordance with the highly diversified religious landscape of East Asia. Consequently, this issue brings together contributions on Japanese, Chinese and Korean films, including one additional glimpse to South Asia, thereby presenting portrayals of independent filmmakers, highly renowned classics, but also specimina of manga and anime, the cyberpunk genre, or on most recent highly successful streaming series. The admittedly tiny sample we can provide is intended to pique curiosity and encourage readers to delve deeper into the multifaceted and intriguing relationship between religion and media in Asia. If the presented contributions, which have been carefully selected, lead to academic discourse and inspire further research, then this issue will have served its purpose. This footage is going to premiered in Japan on Dec 13, 2023 in Tokyo Documentary Film Festival. https://tdff-neoneo.com/lineup/lineup-4190/#movie03 <https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Ftdff-neoneo.com%2Flineup%2Flineup-4190%2F%3Ffbclid%3DIwAR1gaAXoEVI9dPywF6KivEFaLMMtnSJjhGlYKc6gZOQlpWUV1Q3eQ4pKJK0%23movie03&h=AT2It_Mgo8z9cKfh8cKb_UzkVX1LHPUSjp1r-LQ4cz12bFcbu_9vKd-D2mexie-hLSfSskQNhKxDmgMliFMFdntjZEkgbNU0WcCkeKpPnkYX56CjowndcwFGiOZ6XoIlnCAIM420ythMogDeUg&__tn__=-UK-R&c[0]=AT2wSS6NlUAFciWyyuexyUIdKtM4YV592ohvp6F04KYOUOXAdbI_NNvk44eBEPBZGIghGhYvohDj9LnUHatCXUuDw2GJQYHYqSZHInGFaTyVq5Z8v3SrzpFj-m99zxiTuayhPH8fzIwN9Nbj31YFwymPWKSd29pN8eJ9PIk> Warm Regards, Yukihiko YOSHIDA -- # distributed via <nettime>: no commercial use without permission # <nettime> is a moderated mailing list for net criticism, # collaborative text filtering and cultural politics of the nets # more info: https://www.nettime.org # contact: nettime-l-owner@lists.nettime.org
