We work with photographic archive material  from the Cold War period. The
imagery from this period is rich in the clumsy symbolism of government
propaganda. It seems that in the period immediately after WWII, those
techno-scientific developments that had previously been the exclusive domain
of military scientists, overflowed into Society.  Technology appeared in
still images either in the form of pseudo-informative popular propaganda or
of highly censored press coverage of the many scientific tests and
technological accidents. These images are easily confused with the McCarthy
period Hollywood films of giant ants and space invaders. It was a period of
manipulated apocalyptic optimism, and the beginning of a new age where WE
(rather than war) became the consumers of accelerated technological
development, and threatened by their accidents: hence mutant fish, giant
insects and King Kong didn¹t fight the marines in the battlefield, but in
our cities.  However, the Hollywood myth would have us believe that only our
military technologies could save us from these mutant invaders (communists) .
We rework these images because they belong to that period which marked the
beginning of the shift of technological consumption from war, to the
consumerism that we know today.
