[Nettime-nl] Fwd: [CEO] Who's Paying for the Brussels Think Tank Boom?

“Transparency unthinkable? Financial secrecy common among EU think tanks”

Think tanks are increasingly important players in the political landscape
in the EU capital Brussels, but their influence is most often not
matched with basic financial transparency, including about sources of
funding. The least
transparent are the radical “free market” think tanks; the fastest growing
sector within the Brussels think tanks landscape.

“Covert industry funding fuels the expansion of radical rightwing EU think
tanks”

Think tanks advocating radical "free market" ideology are rapidly
expanding
their presence in Brussels. Their funding sources are shrouded in
secrecy, but
CEO research shows that large corporations like BAT and Exxon Mobil are
eagerly
financing the growth of these think tanks, who systematically oppose
social and
environmental protection.

ALTER-EU Launched

The Alliance for Lobbying Transparency and Ethics Regulation (ALTER-EU)
has now
been officially launched. The first ALTER-EU press conference (July 19th
in
Brussels) was attended by EU Commissioner Siim Kallas, who confirmed that
he
will propose an online register for EU lobbyists. Kallas, however, still
needs to be convinced of the need for mandatory (as opposed to
voluntary) lobbying disclosure.
ALTER-EU's founding statement is supported by over 150 civil society
groups, trade unions, academics and public affairs firms. Sign-ons are
still very welcome!
