This exhibition of works from the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam (SMA) represents the first comprehensive presentation of the collection of a major Western European museum of modern art in south-eastern Europe. This Amsterdam museum has specialised in collecting and presenting works of modern and contemporary art; since its establishment in 1895, this institution has been simultaneously a museum and a Kunsthalle, an institution for the preservation and historisation of major works of art as much as a space for a timely presentation of current artistic practice. The Amsterdam museum, just like the Belgrade Museum of Contemporary Art, functions in the same way today; it is precisely the manner in which SMA establishes its collection that testifies to the entire tradition of a timely purchase and presentation of works that illustrate continual changes in artistic ideas and methods throughout the previous century and today. The selection of works by more then 60 artists from the SMA collection has been made exclusively for this exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade, and represents a testimony to such an active policy of collecting and exhibiting. This exhibition is the result of cooperation between the Amsterdam and the Belgrade museums, and the curators Geurt Imanse and Branislav Dimitrijević.

This exhibition of works from the SMA collection is historical and aims to show to what extent the second half of the twentieth century was turbulent when it came to re-examining the complex relationships between art and society, institutionalisation and emancipation, economic value and symbolic meaning. The selection of works has been made based on insight into the SMA collection itself, first of all the artistic phenomena that are most comprehensively represented in it, taking particular care to feature the most important Dutch artists of the second half of the twentieth century. Care has also been taken to include those artists who have influenced Yugoslav modern and contemporary art in any significant way and, generally, many artists whose names represent key references in art history in the second half of the twentieth century in Western Europe and America. In order to show that the Stedelijk Museum is an institution paying particular attention to current art as well, the focus of the exhibition is on works dating from the last two decades. In this way, this exhibition becomes the most comprehensive presentation of the art of the latter half of the twentieth century ever staged in Belgrade, and has the potential to be of great educational and cultural significance for our country, as well as the entire region of south-eastern Europe.

The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue containing photographic reproductions of all the works and texts by the curators; a special "Reader", containing a selection of texts on artists whose works are exhibited will also be prepared. In the course of the exhibition, lectures and curatorial guided tours will be organised every Saturday and Sunday at 1pm.
