DIALTONE is a net audio installation exposing the physical and virtual
space of the internet and attempting to open this hybrid space for
sounds and noises by using simple telecomunication instruments like
telephones and answering machines. This audio interface between
telephone network and the internet explores how interaction and
compression changes audio in a network. The installation connects the
venue to our telecommunication network through sound and vision. 

3 answering machines recieve 3 minute sound samples from all around the
world. People transmit audio tracks with simple telephones by dialing
one of the 3 "sound servers" and uploading nioses, words, or music. The
machines are connected to an audio mixer and a to an amplifier for
performing and installing the audio network live. Visitors in the venue
mix the uploaded samples and work with the content of the system. 3
cameras capture the displays of the answering machines which are
projected back into the space for a phisical and for a virtual audience
- live at the gallery (pavillon crescendo / Leipzig) and on

The system is installed 24 hours, on Wednesday, June 28. 2000

Don´t hezitate! Feel free to participate and interact with the system.
Pick up your phone, dial one of the numbers above, choose a sample and
upload it! I suggest you choose abstract sound samples, ambient
soundscapes, simple tunes, noises or words you can best transmit with
every simple telephone. 

If a line is busy, please dial an another number, or try again later. If
you hear the dialtone more than 3 times, please try an another number.
(In this case the machine you´ve dialed is currently playing sounds)

DIALTONE ist ein Netz-Audio-Installation, das sowohl den physischen als
auch den virtuellen Raum des Internets bespielt und versucht, diesen
hybriden Raum für Sounds und Klänge mittels einfacher
Telekommunikationsinstrumenten (Telefone und Anrufbeantworter) zu öffnen
und zu erkunden, wie sich Musik in diesem System durch Interaktion
verändert. Die Installation verbindet den Veranstaltungsort mit unserem
Telekommunikationsnetzwerk in Bild und Ton.

Drei Anrufbeantworter empfangen 3 minütige Sound-Samples. Aktive
Teilnehmer spielen über ihre Tlefone Klänge, Geräusche oder Musik auf.
Die Anrufbeantworter sind mit einem Audiomixer verbunden, womit Besucher
die ankommenden Anrufe mischen und die Inhalte verändern können. Die
Displays der Geräte werden mit 3 kleinen Kameras eingefangen und über
zwei Videomischer und einen Beamer in den Raum und live ins Netz
projiziert.
