1.1 INVITATION TO THE INAUGURATION OF THE MEDIA FAÇADE BIX
Hereby we kindly invite you to the inauguration of the media façade "BIX" on
September 25-27th in Graz, Austria. BIX and the Kunsthaus Graz in which BIX
is integrated will be opened together in a series of events between
September 25th and 27th.
Highlight will be a set of live audio-visual performances on BIX on the
night of September 27th, starring the artists Carsten Nicolai,
realities:united and John de Kron.

1.2 SHORT INTRODUCTION TO BIX:
BIX was conceived, designed and realised by realities:united, Berlin. It is
a 900m2 large media installation made of fluorescent light rings embedded
into the futuristic acrylic glass surface of the Kunsthaus Graz.
(Architects: Peter Cook, Colin Fournier, Niels Jonkhaus, Mathis Osterhagen,
Marco Cruz and others: www.kunsthausgraz.at)
However, BIX is less an traditional autonomous piece of art but an
"architectural enabler". BIX aim is to "tune" the biomorphic Kunsthaus
architecture with the help of 930 standard circular 40W fluorescent lights.
Each lamp serves as a pixel, which can be controlled individually by a
central computer. That way simple signs, images and films in low resolution
can be generated over the whole Eastern front.
BIX can be seen as an "urban screen": it is both a new instrument and a
platform for artistic production, made to project the communicative aspect
of the Kunsthaus into public space.
In the research field of media facades BIX is likely to set a new standard
for the degree and quality of fusion between architecture and media
technology.

2. FURTHER DETAILS & INFORMATION:
2.1 DETAILS ON THE INAUGURATION

> Kunsthaus plaza and other Locations throughout Graz
Starting at 19:00h several live Music/ Visual sets will be performed on BIX.
To allow different spectator positions in Graz the sound channel will be
broadcast live by Radio Helsinki (92,6 MHz / http://helsinki.mur.at/ ),
Graz. Cars with tuned sound systems will act as mobile amplifying units at
the 'Uhrturm', the 'Hauptbrücke' and other locations with direct view on the
Kunsthaus.

An after hour lounge party will be held at the Kunsthaus foyer.

2.2.2 BIX Camera Preview

On that evening during the hours of dusk BIX will be operated with a special
programme optimized for filming and photography. BIX content and light
situation can be adapted on request of the photographers/ camera operators.

2.2.3 BIX Press Opening "Open Kunsthaus"

Starting at 17:30h invited international Press will be greeted and guided
through the Kunsthaus by architects Peter Cook and Colin Fournier of
spacelab. Afterwards at 19:00h BIX will be introduced and demonstrated.
(Location: roof terrace of the Kästner & Öhler Sport Department Store at the

21st international eCAADe conference in Graz
(Education and Research in Computer Aided Architectural Design in Europe)

Keynote speech on the Kunsthaus Graz and the BIX installation
Niels Jonkhans (ArGe Kunsthaus) & Jan and Tim Edler (realities:united)
Conference Theme: There is no question any longer about whether the computer
can be used as an effective tool in creating and producing architecture.
However, drafting and visualisation are still the dominant applications in
architecture. The power of the computer as a design tool and as a design
stimulator has still to be fully exploited. Experiences within research
communities show that the implementation of computer applications in an
early stage of the architectural design process still seems to be limited.
In times where architectural curricula are responding to contemporary
education needs, the question of positioning computer related subjects
demands a well-founded approach; an approach based on informed research,
knowledge of education and issues architectural design processes. The 2003
eCAADe-conference will consider a range of issues that impinge on how
computers are involved in the design process.
