LIBERTE, EGALITE, FRATERNITE Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite :brought to life by the virtue of their 'unattainable-ity'. Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite :go for IT revolution! Internet! This new utopia for :guess what:( a brand new social order) took effect after the ltest Christian utopia (Communism) screwed it all up. Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite :here we go:into the Net:the net, pampering us into new coziness (no flesh, no gravity guaranteed) : Here we go, unisex creatures (no faces, no backs for sure):avatars per se. Heavenly Krishna's avatars : or very much like them, anyway. Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite : optic cables, satelite connections, buzzing modems :Feeling free, floating all around : once I knew hoe it felt to be 'me' : can't recognize that stranger any longer. Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite : Welcome to the Internet, most welcome, in fact. Be prepared to get global communication and global control in a single benefit package (two in one formula, sort of) : Don't you forget these two glue easily together. Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite : the credit for the last attempt (failed) to raise them high up the roof beams of social establishment goes to : Communism. Communism was quick to sacrifice freedom for the sake of equality and fraternity : it all ended up with fraternity and equality gravely deficient. Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite : the trademark of the French 1848 revolution. Capital was quick to trade off equality and fraternity for freedom, wickedly pronouncing freedom deprived of power as 'anarchy', in the meantime. Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite : Internet, being an'oofspring' of capital : did NOT 'degenerate into 'anarchy'. Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite :Communism denying us freedom, 'kindly' lent us the chance to welcome it inside : deep inside : real deep. Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite : trained to act 'politically correct', eh? Capital starring as our ultimate tutor : Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite :freedom implies communication, equality and fraternity imply sharing with one another : no royalties about sharing, aren't there? Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite : we are about to face new 'fraternities' :new aching personality issues :personality can only survive dumping of values through subtle break-downs and ramifications : of what is 'myself'? Capital gave birth to Democracy. Labour gave birth toour first alienation(Marx can make a decent reference here). Our latest alienation: the departure from our bodies : Welcome to Internet : Welcome to the health club : Welcome back to your body! Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite : human machine is capable of self-evaluation and equipped with imagination. The thing that anthropology is after today : it's definitely NOT the limes of human and wild : it's RATHER the transition of human into : machine? Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite : look at them, God equals, gone beyond time, beyond space, beyond flesh, beyond shape : universal and ubiquitous : all Internet creatures : ready to choose between AGGRESSIVE AUTISM and AUTOMATION. Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite : their profile? 21 c. : global freedom? Global democracy : total democracy : Austria 2000 fair and democratic elections :Austria that makes a difference :oh my! Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite : fly the globe on the wings of Democracy! Globalization has a distinct totalitarian streak about it: nothing should be let out of the system. The only sound choice left :to get off the Earth : for now. Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite : the freedom to choose between universality : and particularity (a sort of countrylike, disconcertingly intimate, personal experiences) : like being the village craftsman : my choice goes with him. 'World art stage' has always been somewhat vague to me : lacking the addressee of communication : raising doubts about its ethic stand : Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite : it implies personalized attitude to creation. Artists and curators are nowadays transformed into migrants, easy on their way from one place to another, pretending to present their 'attitudes here and there 9what do such trifles like cultures matter to their 'true' art anyway). Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite : the collapse of Communism (as the utopia's latest failed effort to come to life) made room for the hope that there's this new chance ('the last we've got : but we can work it out, once and for all : this time for ever') to revive the ideals of Enlightenment and Modernity through the comfort and enchantment we take with IT. Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite : 20 century was a typical outburst of projects for capitalist reform. Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite : power provides the scope and the structure of our freedom: this is the golden rule of liberal democracy. It may happen, though that we are only let to be free : 'deep, deep inside, baby' : Now, like it or not, these are the rules of being politically corect. Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite : ten years ago we were still in the grip of the Soviet bloc. Now, it's the EC consolidating together : boundaries precisely drawn to divide insiders : from those outside. If it was not for this desperate strife to get inside, : by all means to be let inside : we would see that we are let free, : beyond limits :in a nobody's land .. which seems to be our own. Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite : real space has progrssively diverged from virtuality. My land has no equivalent, so far, in this virtual space. Divergencies keep growing, my territory keeps shrinking : until it's the size of my sculp. Invasion into the tiny piece of my land, under my forehead : has already started : what I find inside is .. the language of the Empire. The Empire invades the mind, annexing language and : faith in the process. The wicked thing about it is that we :are volunteering the invasion altogether. What turns out to be impossible to render into the language of the Empire, is to be kicked off board : no sooner desirable, no longer permitted. Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite : Globalization speaks one language (English?). Geographical boundaries cannot hold us : Language sneaks into us, abides in us, feeds on our minds. We in our headlong rush to grasp the world, to become part of it : we end up in adopting its language, its world vision and daily routines : with the crashing naivete of post socialist adolescents. Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite : going back home, feeling the comfort of our mother tongue, the warmth of our bodies, the light from our thought, the gravity of being self-contained : going back to ourselves, reconciled with the void ness of Ego :looking at the world through its 'looking-at-the-world' window :.weell, it feels different, doesn't it? Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite : Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite : Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite : Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite : Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite : Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite : Ventsislav Zankov http://zetmag.org/zankov www.photone.ch/zankov www.freespeech.org/zankov ------Syndicate mailinglist-------------------- Syndicate network for media culture and media art information and archive: http://www.v2.nl/syndicate to unsubscribe, write to <syndicate-request@aec.at> in the body of the msg: unsubscribe your@email.adress
