SYMPOSIUM ON PHOTOGRAPHY XVII AGENTS AND AGENCIES. Photography between Discourse and Document II October 17 - 19, 1997 Marieninstitut, Kirchengasse 1, Graz This year's SYMPOSIUM ON PHOTOGRAPHY is carrying on from last year's focus on contemporary photography as a cultural technique. "Photography between discourse and document"- the title of an essay by Benjamin Buchloh - refers to the multivalent and equivocal status of photography as a means of representation that would on the one hand appear to portray a constant reoccurrence of the real (document) and, on the other, that acts as a vehicle and agent of cultural communication, i. e. operating within the symbolic order of culture which allows it to open up fields of operation and agencies for concrete meanings, initiatives and claims to representativeness. But what is the position regarding this "agency" of photography in view of the tremendous reorganization of visual communication by the fast development of new media technologies, i. e. in a situation in which the "agents" of the production of meaning would seem to have moved off into the realm of media systems? Being simultaneously defined in terms of media/technology and discourse, photography is in a situation of interchange with other cultural practices whose rapid change and reworking has induced us to focus on the problems surrounding the concepts of representation, knowledge, experience, aesthetics, etc., which has of course equally left its mark on photography. If there is no pre-discursive social reality that could be represented "directly", photography is fundamentally tied to practices of reflection that are able to objectify and designate cultural conditions, i. e. that are able to create social facts by designating them - by representing agents of their appearance. "Agents and Agencies" introduces several such practices of reflection into the discourse on photography, again conveying artistic photographic practices into a general context of analysis and description of contemporary society.
