International Award for Video Art / ZKM Competition for Video, CD-ROM, Internet (information from the web site http://www.videokunst.swf.de - be careful, it takes several minutes for transferring all the data! -i) Terms of Participation The Suedwestfunk Baden-Baden (SWF-Southwestern Broadcasting Corporation) and the ZKM | Zentrum fŸr Kunst und Medientechnologie Karlsruhe (Center for Art and Media) have mutually organized since 1992 the Ã?International Award for Video ArtÃ? in order to provide a forum of presentation and a new field for experimentation with video, CD-Rom and the Internet in collaboration with the SF DRS (Swiss Broadcasting Corporation). 1998 International Award for Video Art 50000 DM Supporting Prize 5000 DM Production Award Audience Award 1. The awards will be made according to the artistic quality of the works as well as the originality and creativity in transposing the specific media. 2. The awards will be bestowed by an independent jury by majority vote. The Audience Award will be determined by televoting polls and internet votes. Competitors have no legal right of appeal against the jury's decision. 3. Individuals as well as groups have the right to participate. In the case of groups, the individual having the overall control of the artistic component must be named. Employees of the organizers are excluded from participating in the contest. The submitted works must be free from advertising content. 4. Each participant may submit a maximum of two works completed after 1 January 1996. Video works should not exceed 15 minutes in length. Maximum length: 30 minutes. By submitting the tape, the participants certify that they possess all rights pertaining to the submitted works and exempt the organizers from all third-party claims. 5. Artistic video works must be submitted on broadcastable video tapes (PAL formats: Beta SP, U-matic HB/LB, Hi-8, S-VHS; NTSC: only on Beta SP or U-matic). For preliminary viewing VHS copies may also be submitted in PAL/NTSC formats. The video tapes must be labelled with the name of the participant, the title of the works and the other usual technical data. Multimedia works (CD-Rom or Internet) are to be submitted with their precise technical specification and a documentation on paper regarding content and size of the work. The works are to be submitted with the completed entry form. 6. The works must be sent to the following address by 15 April, 1998: ZKM | Zentrum fŸr Kunst und Medientechnologie Karlsruhe Lorenzstrasse 19 D-76135 Karlsruhe Germany The post-mark is considered to be the valid date of mailing. 7. A preselection jury consisting of representatives of the SWF, the ZKM, and the SF DRS will select a maximum of 50 of the submitted works. Among the nominations the independent jury will determine the winners. The awards will be presented publicly on 25 October 1998 in Karlsruhe and will be published in a catalogue as well as on the Internet. 8. All participants in the contest consent to a one-time broadcasting of their works on the Third Channels of ARD as well as on SF DRS. They transfer all necessary rights to the SŸdwestfunk (rights for broadcasting, archiving, use of >1-minute excerpts for promotion, reports and information and for digital services such as the Internet as well as for CD-Rom) and exempt the SWF, the ZKM and the SF DRS >from all possible third-party claims. Each participant whose submission to the contest is nominated and broadcast will receive from SŸdwestfunk a one time honorarium of DM 1500 (c. $ 900). The works will be broadcast only in connection with the contest. Any other use of the works requires a special agreement. 9. The artists who have received awards for their work grant the right to repeat the broadcast of their work and the use of excerpts in the context of the Ã?International Award for Video ArtÃ? on the Third Channels of ARD, on SF DRS and on 3sat. The award winners agree to allow the organizers of the competition the use of their films for non-commercial purposes (e.g. festivals, inclusion in ZKM's video collection). The use of the videos and excerpts is paid off and covered by the award. 10. In competing for the Ã?1998 International Award for Video ArtÃ? all of the above mentioned conditions pertaining to the contest have been accepted.
