Re: <nettime> the great re-alignment |
What I was thinking to do was provide guidance for best practices in forming and sustaining online communities, with the hope that true communities would form as an alternative to drive-by social media posting. Community doesn't scale to large numbers as you have on corporate social media sites, but smaller communities can form networks to share thoughts and strategies more broadly. Not clear about best platforms, but microblogging (X, Bluesky, Mastodon, Threads) is scattershot and doesn't really favor in-depth conversation or true community formation. Discord might work. Subreddits might work. Discourse might work. And there's the WELL, where I've experienced community for 35 years. https://www.well.com/join/ On Tue, Nov 12, 2024 at 5:00 AM David Herzog via nettime-l < nettime-l@lists.nettime.org> wrote: > > Dear Jon, > > hahaha, I find the Nettime system for replying really confusing, but at > least > this time indeed I have to be embarassed of what I wrote, while I was > setting > up a small note for myself to answer your mail at a later time and forgot > to > change the adressee. > > Now I need an immediate answer so that I don't have to feel so ashamed. > I've > really put myself in a forced labour situation that binds me. > > Of course, your idea of developing an online counter to what Peter Lamborn > Wilson called ‘the unchallenged domination of money over people’ is not > new, > but that doesn't change its tremendous necessity. > > Would you be so kind as to explain your ideas in more detail? > > Also, on my cold ICE journey from Berlin to Munich, I wondered whether it > would make sense to look up Jaromil's text from the dyne list 2021, when > he > had written a similar foundational text in the midst of the Corona crisis > but > independently of it on why building strong online counter-communities is > important because of the FLOSS & DEBIAN vs. devuan disputes. > > Some old friends and I have been despairing of this task for thirty or > more > years.
